New FrostWire 1.5.2 for Android with improved Search experience.

Download FrostWire Plus 1.5.2 (absolutely Free!)

After we had to remove YouTube search from the FrostWire version distributed on Google Play, aka “FrostWire Basic”, we heard your complains loud and clear.

As a first solution, we created a “FrostWire Plus” distribution that has all the features you were used to and we made it available on our website.

For those users that simply won’t bother to get out of Google Play to get an app we had to make things better with respect to torrent search, FrostWire 1.5.2 is a first step on that direction.

FrostWire Basic users should feel a big difference when searching once they upgrade to 1.5.2.

An Improved Search Experience

In the past, as you searched, FrostWire would make very intensive use of your network resources, it’d try to query the DHT for every candidate torrent, download the torrent, parse the torrent and apply matching heuristics to show you relevant search results.

As of 1.5.2 we’ve started searching for more information about the torrents contents right from the search sources search results, this means, in some instances almost immediate individual files appearing on search results and much needed freeing the DHT network of millions of searches a day.

As a result to your experience, not only you get faster search results, but when you start a download it will take less to get started as FrostWire is not busy talking to hundreds of peers on the network.

15 - 1

Also we’ve included some user interface upgrades that can help make your search more streamlined in case you’re not finding what you’re looking for. FrostWire will now show you search suggestions based on what you’ve entered, basically showing you reduced versions of your previous search, so you don’t have to manually delete words, now you can just push a button to try an alternate more general search which will increase your chances of finding relevant content.

FrostWire is a free, open source BitTorrent client first released in September 2004, as a fork of LimeWire. It was initially very similar to LimeWire in appearance and functionality, but over time developers added more features, including BitTorrent support. In version 5, Gnutella support was dropped entirely, and FrostWire is only a BitTorrent client. Development of the program has been active since the program was first released in September 2004.

Periodic user interface freeze on Windows FIXED.

A portion of the Windows userbase was experiencing a periodic freeze every few seconds in the user interface after upgrading to FrostWire 6.0.2.

We discovered it was a bug that was introduced in the boost libraries after 1.56.

In order to fix this issue, please upgrade your FrostWire to 6.0.3 or later.

FrostWire 6.0.1 released. Available now for download.

We can proudly say this is the leanest, and fastest FrostWire release we’ve ever made, and we’re only getting started with the performance improvements.

Download it now for free from the Official FrostWire Website:

Windows installer
MacOSX installer (64-bit)
Ubuntu (.deb) installer (64-bit)
RPM installer (64-bit)
TAR.GZ installer (64-bit)

The most fundamental upgrade about the 6.x series is the complete removal of the Azureus Torrent engine, we’ve replaced it with frostwire-jlibtorrent, a Java wrapper of the powerful libtorrent library.

The performance benefits are very palpable on search, downloads and other aspects of the application.

Having Libtorrent under the hood will allow us to continue working on the enablement of advanced features for expert BitTorrent users.

We’d like to invite everyone out there to benchmark FrostWire 5.7.7 against FrostWire 6.0.0 and let us know what they find, we’d love to make FrostWire 6 superior in every respect to the FrostWire 5 series.

HELP WANTED
Contributors are needed to keep moving the project forward at a faster face, we are now converting donations received into bitcoins which are deposited into a “Tip for commit” fund. All the contributions accepted into the project automatically trigger tips to the authors in bitcoins.

Anybody can help, you don’t need a bank account, or paypal account to receive your tips, all you need is a free Bitcoin wallet which is software you can download to your smartphone or PC, tips are effective immediatly after contributions are merged to the frostwire-desktop, frostwire-common, frostwire-jlibtorrent, and frostwire-android projects.

Like on Android, you can now fully stop the player
by long pressing the Play/Pause player button.

FrostWire now has a new feature in which it tries to detect wether or not you are using a VPN connection to warn you about the possibility of your privacy being at risk.

We recommend that whenever you are online you connect to the internet using an encrypted VPN connection to protect your identity and your privacy.

If you are a developer/translator/graphic designer, you should know that now you can earn bitcoins when your patches and contributions are merged to the master branches of our open source projects on github.

You will automatically receive Bitcoins in your Bitcoin wallet, you just need to have a github account and a tip4commit account where you can register your Bitcoin wallet address. Payments are sent within minutes of your patches being merged.

FrostWire Bitcoin donations are being diverted into our main open source projects frostwire-desktop, frostwire-android, frostwire-common and frostwire-jlibtorrent.

Each merged commit gets 1% of what’s left on each fund.

Preparing for FrostWire 6

We are hard at work on the next generation of FrostWire 6, if you paid attention to the names of our repositories, or if you follow this blog, you may have read about the frostwire-jlibtorrent project. We have made a full featured Java wrapper API out of the C++ libtorrent library and the results of our tests have been phenomenal. We’re currently replacing all of our Bittorrent core for one that uses libtorrent and we’re pretty sure you will feel the difference.

Join the FrostWire Beta Testers group to help us release a steady FrostWire 6.

New FrostWire 5.7.2 with uTP support

Download FrostWire 5.7.2 for Windows (Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin enabled .torrent)
Download FrostWire 5.7.2 for MacOSX (.torrent)
Download FrostWire 5.7.2 for Debian/Ubuntu (.torrent)

This release is all about performance and stability.

Some users have complained about what happens to their internet connection when using FrostWire heavily, so we’ve finally added uTP support to solve these issues.

FrostWire can now deal with bandwidth congestion issues in a way that won’t compromise your internet experience while you use it.

You can, for example, see how FrostWire will automatically adjust its transfer speeds to cede network resources to other programs in your computer, like your web browser while surfing the web or streaming a movie from Netflix.

If the connection is not being used by any other software FrostWire will automatically use as much bandwidth as it can, and you don’t have to do this manually using the existing throttling controls, and all this while not clogging up your router’s memory.

Another benefit of having added uTP is that some WiFi/DSL/Cable routers won’t have issues with packet data overflow when torrenting with FrostWire, which in some cases can completely drop the internet connection forcing you to restart your router to reconnect to the Internet.

We’ve also taken care of very important user experience details, that should make FrostWire easier to understand for new users, as well as smaller usability bugs and crashes that have been fixed.

Here’s the full list of changes.

frostwire (5.7.2) stable; urgency=high
  * uTP support enabled.
  * Multiple crash fixes.
  * UX: playable single file torrents now can be played from transfer list.
  * UX: Fixes UI Thread freeze when opening Options > Search.
  * UX: Better error reporting when a torrent can't be fetched from a
        magnet connection.
  * Spanish translation update by @dennistobar.

Updates in plain english

We’ve fixed a bug that would disable the internet search box after sending a file to a friend (woops, fixed!)

Now you can preview audio files that come in search results from archive.org, wohoo!

Now when you download a single audio file that belongs to a torrent with many files, you can decide wether or not to seed it (even if you have seeding turned on).
If you check Tools > BitTorrent, you will see a new checkbox under to configure this behavior. We added this because, if you seed handpicked files, you’re often will find yourself seeding 2 other incomplete files and this tends to confuse the hell out of new bittorrent users. So, if you’re a good advanced bittorrent user you can still seed handpicked files (aka “partial downloads”). We also used the ocassion to change the wording to “Handpicked” instead of “Partial Download” which was also confusing a lot of people thinking that downloads were not finished even though they were.

We’ve also added a new mechanism so that you can have your frostwire configuration folder on a custom location.

Full changelog so far
