FrostWire 4.17.2 for MacOSX

Download FrostWire 4.17.2 for MacOSX

This release for MacOSX includes some of the fixes added to Windows 4.17.2 release but it’s aimed mostly to solve some incompatibilities found on the new Macbooks and Macbook PROs.

Some Mac users had reported that FrostWire 4.17.1 would not start , we revised the previous launcher and fixed possible errors and updated the Mac OSX native libraries for improved Leopard compatibility. Also FrostWire will now refuse to be executed from the Disk Image (DMG), teaching some newly mac-converted users how they should install the application.

New FrostWire 4.17.2 for Windows

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Official FrostWire 4.17.2 Windows Download link

Earlier this week the FrostWire community reported an issue with our latest fixes dealing with .bittorrent file associations in FrostWire 4.17.1 for windows. Thanks to user “Trel” we have now resolved this issue and launched a hot fix release that resolves the problem, also pushing forward a fix that will enable FrostWire to save considerable bandwidth when communicating over the Mojito DHT network, thus making the P2P network healthier as more users upgrade to 4.17.2.

Hat tip to the LimeWire Team for sharing the Mojito DHT findings.

CHANGELOG:

Version 4.17.2 (November 2008)

  • Fixes a newly introduced bug in Windows which would make FrostWire(tm) take over the .bittorrent file association without asking the user.
  • Reduces DHT network load. The LimeWire team found out that the Mojito “store forwarding” feature would not provide extra data availability, so it’s been turned off from the DHT on all new FrostWires.
  • FrostWire.ico has been updated. Now when FrostWire(tm) is associated to .bittorrent files, .bittorrent files will use the FrostWire(tm) icon.
  • Note: Version 4.17.2 exists only for Windows users. Mac and Linux users don’t need to worry about this hotfix release.

    FrostWire Blog moved to WordPress.com

As you’ve noticed, we have moved our blog outside our official domain and out here to wordpress.com.
This is because we’ve been victims of a security exploit on an old version of wordpress.
We decided it’s better to leave the blog here where the wordpress gurus will take care of it better.

All posts and comments have been exported without any problems whatsoever.

    Forums under maintenance

The amount of spam we’ve been fighting with the last weeks is overwhelming, therefore we finally made the decision to upgrade to phpBB3.
The DB migration has gone far so good.
We’re currently indexing all the posts so you can have search working fast once the forums are back up.

Up to this point we don’t know if the conversion script will help us bring the theme, we may come back with the default theme for a couple of days while we prepare phpBB3 to look the way we did on phpBB2.

As soon as we’re post-able we’ll be back up.

FrostWire now available on Gentoo Linux’s Portage package system

We want to give thanks to William L. Thomson Jr from Gentoo for making FrostWire available to people running Gentoo ~arch or unstable ~x86 or ~amd64.

If you are a Gentoo Linux user you can now just do:

    emerge frostwire

    And as William says:

it will bring in all deps, compile, install, make desktop menu entries, launcher, etc 🙂

If you’re interested here’s the package

    About Gentoo

The Gentoo Linux operating system (pronounced /ˈdÊ’É›ntuː/) is a Linux distribution based on the Portage package management system. The development project and its products are named after the Gentoo penguin. Gentoo package management is designed to be modular, portable, easy to maintain, flexible, and optimized for the user’s machine. User luisdrk from Caracas,Venezuela has posted this picture on flickr. Pretty cool stuff. it’s actually a parody of this picture by Jesus Molina.

It’s really funny because we had our inspiration from a similar source, we looked for the words “frost wire” in flickr, and we saw frozen barbed wires, this is the one that caught our eye and then we talked to a great graphic designer who did the logo for us.
