What is FrostWire?

FrostWire is a free, open source BitTorrent client first released in September 2004, as a fork of LimeWire. It was initially very similar to LimeWire in appearance and functionality, but over time developers added more features, including support for the BitTorrent protocol and a full blown media player.

New FrostWire for Android now with “Play before download” (Streaming Preview – v.1.6.0)

A huge new update for Android is here.

We’ve finally done what you’ve been always asking for, “Play before download” (FrostWire Plus only) and “Play while you download” (available on basic too)

Play before download, a.k.a. “Preview”

Starting on FrostWire Plus 1.6.0 for Android (the one available only on our website, also 100% free), YouTube and SoundCloud search results can be streamed for preview, this way you can know ahead of time if this is the file you need for offline access, or if you just want to play it, you can do so.

Play while you download

But what about .torrent downloads? Given the distributed nature of the file pieces on the Bittorrent network, TODAY it’s harder to give you the same experience we can give you when streaming from a cloud source, we could do preview, but you’d be frustrated how long you’d have to wait in most cases.

Therefore, you can start any media Bittorrent download, and while you’re on the transfer screen you can wait for a Play button to appear. Once this button appears you can start playing the file before it finishes the download.

But I have FrostWire Basic only! I want previews too
Then just get FrostWire Plus on our website right now! it’s absolutely free.

Changelog:

FrostWire 1.6.0 - AUGUST/03/2015
 - Streaming Previews on search results before download. (FrostWire Plus only)
 - Play .torrent media files while downloading.
 - Upgrade bittorrent engine to jlibtorrent 1.0
 - Updated SoundCloud search & download api.
 - Improved search suggestions.
 - Improved transition between My Music and Home screens.
 - Multiple crash fixes in music player.

FrostWire now back on Google Play. Not Banned Anymore!

Yesterday FrostWire was temporarily removed from the Google Play Store and is now back up after a new stripped down version without YouTube got approved by the Google compliance team.

FrostWire.com and other App Stores will still distribute the full featured version, now dubbed FrostWire Plus.

With recent stability fixes FrostWire for Android has climbed all the way up to #30th on the Google Play’s Top Free Android Apps and was holding strong for weeks! Yesterday, April 2nd 2015, after an app review (probably prompted by the spike in user interest and app ratings), Google decided to remove it from the Google Play store.

We’ve received this email:

Google Play FrostWire Removal Notice Email
Google Play FrostWire Removal Notice Email
We were informed that FrostWire for Android distributed via Google Play can no longer have YouTube as one of its search result and download sources, as this functionality is not compliant with the YouTube Terms of Service and therefore the Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement. We decided to remove this capability in order to adhere to Google Rules and continue to distribute and market our application on the Google Play Store.
Today, after submitting the stripped down FrostWire app, it passed the compliance review and it is back on the Google Play store. It took a little more than a day but we are happy to be back!

What does it all mean in practice?

Users downloading FrostWire from the Google Play store will receive the basic app version without YouTube as one of the search sources. All other features will not be affected. Depending on what keywords a user enters, he or she might get slightly less search results and therefore options for files to download.

We are already working on including more search sources, both BitTorrent and cloud based to offset the loss of YouTube content and will be still offering the full version – now named FrostWire Plus, on our homepage and in other App Stores.
Stay tuned for more updates shortly!

FrostWire 6.0.1 released. Available now for download.

We can proudly say this is the leanest, and fastest FrostWire release we’ve ever made, and we’re only getting started with the performance improvements.

Download it now for free from the Official FrostWire Website:

Windows installer
MacOSX installer (64-bit)
Ubuntu (.deb) installer (64-bit)
RPM installer (64-bit)
TAR.GZ installer (64-bit)

The most fundamental upgrade about the 6.x series is the complete removal of the Azureus Torrent engine, we’ve replaced it with frostwire-jlibtorrent, a Java wrapper of the powerful libtorrent library.

The performance benefits are very palpable on search, downloads and other aspects of the application.

Having Libtorrent under the hood will allow us to continue working on the enablement of advanced features for expert BitTorrent users.

We’d like to invite everyone out there to benchmark FrostWire 5.7.7 against FrostWire 6.0.0 and let us know what they find, we’d love to make FrostWire 6 superior in every respect to the FrostWire 5 series.

HELP WANTED
Contributors are needed to keep moving the project forward at a faster face, we are now converting donations received into bitcoins which are deposited into a “Tip for commit” fund. All the contributions accepted into the project automatically trigger tips to the authors in bitcoins.

Anybody can help, you don’t need a bank account, or paypal account to receive your tips, all you need is a free Bitcoin wallet which is software you can download to your smartphone or PC, tips are effective immediatly after contributions are merged to the frostwire-desktop, frostwire-common, frostwire-jlibtorrent, and frostwire-android projects.

New FrostWire 5.5.2 out – Look Mom, No Java required (full changelog)

happy-thanksgiving-2012

A very important FrostWire update has been released featuring about 20 bug fixes and enhancements.

Mac users that had issues with 5.5.1 and downgraded to 5.5.0 should update to 5.5.2, lots of issues were fixed for the Mac platform as we get ready to submit FrostWire to the MacOSX App Store.

Look Mom, No Java required (on Windows, Mac coming soon)
A major change in 5.5.2 for windows is the way that FrostWire uses the Java Runtime Environment.

Before 5.5.2 our installer would check if you had a suitable Java Runtime Environment installed and if it wasn’t there it’d try to download Oracle’s JRE and install it in your computer. This complexity introduced the possibility of several thousand FrostWire installations to not finish properly, our files wouldn’t be decompressed correctly and many of you couldn’t run FrostWire.

After 5.5.2, it doesn’t matter if you have Java installed or not. Our installer comes with a Java Runtime Environment, now every FrostWire running 5.5.2 will be running the same exact version of the JRE thus getting rid of JRE Fragmentation issues. FrostWire comes with a JRE compiled from source by the FrostWire Team, it includes several fixes after the public release of the JRE 7u10 update, and you should feel FrostWire performing a lot better if you’re on Windows.

Lately the Java Runtime Environment has been getting a lot of bad press due to security exploits that affect Java Applets on web browsers, please know that these security vulnerabilities do not affect FrostWire in anyway.

Please let us know of any issues, or enhancements you think are of the utmost importance and we’ll try to include it on 5.5.3 which we hope will have some major changes in the UI, towards our final design for FrostWire 6, which will focus on making the user experience a lot friendly and according to more modern design trends in software applications.

Enjoy and share responsibly.

FrostWire for Android 0.4.16 out – getting ready for 0.5.x

We’re proud to announce tonight a new update of FrostWire for Android version 0.4.16.

Today we fixed a bug that was hidden inside one of the most important (and most used) function in our networking core, it was causing things like
the Chat showing messages said by others under your name, or you trying to browse somebody and then browsing somebody else, or trying to browse someone and never getting a response.

Unless you guys can find new “Force Close” issues tonight, we’ve decided that it’s finally time to move to the 0.5.x series, and these will be a very exciting and challenging series of releases before we make it to the Android Market.

Hopefully after tonight we think we can classify further updates as “beta” releases.

0.5.x !!!
The next series will be all about having FrostWire for Android talk to other devices. We hope 0.5.x not only will make the software better, but make your Android device more useful as a whole.

With FrostWire and the ability to transfer files via Wi-Fi to your computer you won’t have any excuses like “I don’t know where my USB cable is”, or “I’m to lazy to mount my phone right now”. Hopefully this will bring a lot of new amazing content to both mobile network and to the gnutella network.

As you might have guessed by now, we’ll first connect to your Mac/Windows/Linux Desktop/Laptop via FrostWire for Desktop (our BitTorrent/Gnutella client for desktops). But it’s in our early plans to connect FrostWire to the PS3 and the Xbox (or any device that supports UPnP/DLNA browsing and streaming) .

As we do this we’ll also try to make the appearance of the software look a little better. If you can suggest any great UI/UX people we should talk to we’d appreciate it.

Without revealing anymore than we should at this point, I leave you with the entire changelog.

Thank you for all the support and keep spreading the word, the more the merrier.

Introducing FrostWire for Android

Update: Installer now available to the public and it also allows sharing files over the Internet (Wi-Fi only)

Phones and SmartPhones are social devices by nature; we can talk, text, email, browse the web, run applications and access our favorite social networks.

Even though SmartPhones are more capable every day the technology world has a fixation on “cloud” and “cloud based social networking”, it’s almost as if we’re forgetting how powerful computers (and now SmartPhones) can be used to truly enhance the way we interact with the people around us.

Sharing files can be an issue
For example, record a video from your phone video camera and try sending it to people next to you, if it’s more than a minute long you won’t be able to send it via email because it’s too large. You’ll be forced to upload it to the web — or deal with the nuances and shortcomings of Bluetooth, which is slow and cumbersome to set up. Now imagine sending that same video to 6 other people in the room.

If social interaction can happen directly between two or more people that’s the way it should be: phone to phone. Your messages and data should never have to travel all over the internet if they need to end in another device in the same room.

When you want to share files with the people near you, you shouldn’t need cables. You shouldn’t even need an internet connection. We think Wi-Fi connectivity and FrostWire is all you should ever need on your phone.

FrostWire for Android allows multiple Android users connected to a Wi-Fi network to Chat and Share Files at very high speeds in a peer to peer fashion, no third parties involved

Update: By popular demand FrostWire now goes beyond the local Wi-Fi network by allowing users in different Wi-Fi networks to connect through the Internet.

With FrostWire for Android you’ll now be able to do things you could not do before:

Schools

Teachers and students can chat and share class related material like documents, notes and rich media. Teachers are always looking for ways to engage with students and FrostWire will be a great opportunity to connect to your class.

Conferences

Speakers will now be able to deliver presentation slides and related material straight from their Android device to all the attendees, who can in turn help seed the content.

Bars, Cafes, Libraries, Public Squares, Movie Theathers, Airports

Break the ice and meet new people with the Wi-Fi chat. Some of us are shy in real life but we’re very good at interacting online. Use FrostWire to find each other or to get something you need from the people connected in the same venue. Whenever you find yourself in front of an open Wi-Fi network and lots of people there’s an opportunity to use FrostWire and engage in a new social behavior, Short Range Social Networking.

  • Living Rooms. Home Parties Being an Android application it will run on your Google TV. Have some pictures you took during the day, send them to your TV or with anyone else in the room.
  • Nights out with friends, Family Trips We’re tired of all the rain checks when we go out with our friends — they never send those pictures or videos! With FrostWire you can now just grab the ones you like right away.
  • Subway cars

  • With the Froyo Release, Android phones can become Wi-Fi hotspots. Put enough people with Android phones and FrostWire in a subway car and the daily commute becomes a lot more fun.
  • Data Exchange without censorship In countries like China and Iran where there are strict controls over the internet, true peer to peer applications on Wi-Fi networks can provide a safe way to exchange information.
  • What FrostWire for Android IS
FrostWire for Android is Peer to Peer client that allows chatting, browsing, searching, and transfering files between Android devices either locally (on the same Wi-Fi network) or over the Internet (if the Wi-Fi network is internet enabled)

It implements a new p2p protocol meant for WiFi networks and mobile devices, keeping in consideration things like battery life, packet de-congestion on the WiFi hotspot.

The name of this protocol is MetaFrost, we will release all the specifications once it’s matured enough for the Open Source community to implement compatible clients.

In our tests we’ve been able to transfer files at average data rates of up to 1.2Mb/s, the closer to the Wi-Fi hotspot you are the faster the transfer will be.

Tight integration with the desktop version is coming soon, and as of now it’s free.

What FrostWire for Android IS NOT
FrostWire for Android is not a BitTorrent or Gnutella client.

Why? Because the wireless carriers can barely deliver your emails and web pages at this point. Also because you would be breaking your wireless carrier contract if you did P2P networking on their infrastructure.

Connectivity is not very reliable on 3G/EDGE and your phone will do more harm than good to the health of the existing internet P2P networks (by just leeching intermittently) and not to mention the limitations of space and battery that we still face on mobile devices.

    Mark your Turf

FrostWire for Android will more fun if you have some friends around you. If you find an Open Wi-Fi network with lots of people to connect to it will make sense marking your territory, we think the best way to mark your territory will be with FrostWire Stickers
