New: Experimental Features

Starting FrostWire 6.4.6 you can try experimental features at your own risk.

You will have the chance to try the future features of our software! For example, you can try the new setting of VPN-Drop protection. If a VPN connection is not available, automatically FrostWire will stop all BitTorrent traffic for your protection.

New: VPN-Drop protection (Experimental Feature)

As our first experimental feature we’re introducing a Privacy Protection feature for VPN users out there. FrostWire will detect if your VPN connection drops and if you have this setting activated FrostWire will automatically stop all BitTorrent transfers to protect your privacy.

It was initially very similar to LimeWire in appearance and functionality, but over time developers added more features, including support for the BitTorrent protocol and a full blown media player.

Today, we are releasing a new FrostWire version (6.3.4) for Windows, Mac and Linux.This update features a major upgrade.Now, FrostWire includes a new Media Player build based on bleeding edge mplayer +1.3.0 and ffmpeg +3.0, which not just allows you to play a lot of videos you might not have been able to play before, it’s a faster player which uses your computer CPU more efficiently, featuring over 2 years worth of upgrades by hundreds of open source contributors worldwide.

Moreover, this new MPlayer previews fine all YouTube audio/video. It supports VP8, VP9 and HEVC codecs, so now you are allowed to watch millions of videos. The new Mplayer features over 2 years of fixes and upgrades in audio/video technology included.

Our YouTube search has been fixed so expect more search results after the update!

This update focuses on fixing multiple user interface issues, mostly related to the media player. Libraries were updated, a nasty freeze when opening FrostWire out of a magnet link has finally been fixed, and new linux collaborators have given some love to our codebase.

Like on Android, you can now fully stop the player
by long pressing the Play/Pause player button.

FrostWire now has a new feature in which it tries to detect wether or not you are using a VPN connection to warn you about the possibility of your privacy being at risk.

We recommend that whenever you are online you connect to the internet using an encrypted VPN connection to protect your identity and your privacy.

Preparing for FrostWire 6

We are hard at work on the next generation of FrostWire 6, if you paid attention to the names of our repositories, or if you follow this blog, you may have read about the frostwire-jlibtorrent project. We have made a full featured Java wrapper API out of the C++ libtorrent library and the results of our tests have been phenomenal. We’re currently replacing all of our Bittorrent core for one that uses libtorrent and we’re pretty sure you will feel the difference.
