New FrostWire 4.18.0

FrostWire 4.18 Splash screen

FrostWire 4.18.0 is finally out for Windows, Mac and Linux. Among the most important changes are:

  • Fixes Bittorrent Incompatibilities.
  • Mac launcher fixes bug where FrostWire would not allow itself to run on a external disk.
  • Fixes bug on Welcome Screen, now you don’t need to open FrostWire twice to get the latest welcome screen.
  • FrostWire caches the last 2 images shown on the Welcome Screen to save bandwidth from static servers.
  • Tools > Check for Updates. Now FrostWire can check for configuration updates, community messages, new FrostWire releases and welcome screen promotion updates during runtime.
  • The welcome screen can be customized for every language, giving the chance to more content creators to be promoted every week to different audiences that speak their language.
  • The Buttons of the Download Manager have been rearranged to avoid mistakes when trying to resume downloads. The Clear and Cancel Buttons are all the way to the right. Thanks to ‘ssome’ for the suggestion.
  • New Splash Screen.
  • Anti spam filters updated to filter out new keywords used by spammers.
  • New “Buy” icon.
  • The community chat ‘Connect’ button now checks if a nickname has been set and helps the user set a default nickname using an input dialog.
  • When users issue the “/nick” command on the chat, FrostWire will remember the new nickname as the default nickname.

A little more on these updates
Some bugs on the Bittorrent implementation were causing CPU usage to go to 100%, also torrents created with KTorrent presented some incompatibilities that are now fixed. Thanks to FTA for these patches. There’s also some work that exists on the code that will allow FrostWire to let the user download only certain files shared by a torrent. This is useful if you find a torrent with multiple files and you only care about a few of them. Since we need a little more testing for this feature it’s dormant on 4.18.0. FrostWire hackers can play with the code and enable it.

After Unpack200 was introduced for all the FrostWire jars to reduce the installer size we imposed a limitation on the Mac installer that allowed FrostWire to be run (the first time) only from the Applications folder. This limitation is now gone thanks to users that complained when 4.17.2 came out. You can now install FrostWire on your Mac on any folder, including external drives, USB drives, etc.

The integration between and the FrostWire welcome screen will be far more effective as of 4.18.0. Before 4.18.0 FrostWire users would not see the latest promotion from downloads until they’d open FrostWire a second time. Now, the minute a promotion is launched from FrostClick, 4.18.0 will be able to display the featured download and independent artists and free content owners will see the benefits of FrostWire/Frostclick free promotions a lot faster. Also, promotions can now be distributed to different languages so FrostWire communities in other countries will also be able to enjoy content in their own language, opening the stage for more artists per month. The images for promotions are now cached on disk, thus giving a much needed bandwidth relief to the Frostclick/FrostWire servers.

A subtle change on the interface has been implemented. Some users complained about the ordering of the buttons on the download manager, it was causing some of the users to get confused and cancel their downloads. Buttons have been re-arranged so that this doesn’t happen. Also the “Buy Item” button has a more visible icon now.

New users not familiar with IRC terminology got lost in the process of setting up a nickname joining the chat community (since they’d skip steps on the setup wizard and not enter a default nickname). Now FrostWire checks if you have set up or not your chat nickname. If you have not, a friendly dialog will let you set your default nickname before Connecting to the Chatroom. No more, Tools > Options … and restarting needed to join the chat for the first time. Also, when you change your nick using the “/nick” irc command, FrostWire will notice the nick change, and save the new nickname as the new default nickname. Next time you open frostwire, you won’t have to issue the “/nick” command again.

Other than these there are a lot of internal updates and new dormant functionality that subversion followers may have noticed in the code base during the winter months. These game changing upgrades are of such importance that we are leaving them for the FrostWire 5.0 series.

Stay tuned for a few 4.18 releases that will deal directly with spam issues, and order your free stickers before they run out, make sure you send us your pictures.

  1. Hello!

I’ve been a user of FrostWire since its first version and it’s been very awesome, but now, I have to say that I installed and uninstalled the latest version (4.18.0) because every time a download was completed it showed the message “Disk Problem”. This does not happen with version 4.17.2. It would be great if you can check that bug.

P.S. If you need more information about the failure send me an e-mail so I can tell you further details.

  2. Can you download songs from FrostWire to an IPOD player? If so, what are the steps to complete this action?
Since I downloaded FrostWire, I noticed that it is a free site. If I was a victim of a scam, How can I go about getting my money back?
Thank you so much for your support.

  4. I downloaded it and it won’t connect, just like the last time. I have an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz 3.00 GB RAM with a 32-bit Operating System It ran well for a long time until the last two upgrades.

  5. Loved frostwire 4.17. Never had a single problem with it. As soon as I upgraded to 4.18, I have been having problems where it’ll work once downloaded but when I start my computer the next day and open Frostwire, it wont connect. Just sits at “starting connection” mode. Ive gone through F.A.Q, none of those suggestions worked, I opened up on my firewall like no tomorrow, still never connected. I even shut down my firewall and still no connection. Very disappointed with this new release. Must fix this bug when you make new upgrade.

  6. i paid for frostwire and i could not get it to i want to cancel it. the page i was on said i had 7 days to cancel. thank-you, debbie hernandez would you e mail me so i will know it got canceled

  7. Frostwire has always worked until this newest version (4.18), now it just sits at “Starting Connection”. I’m reliably tech-savvy and I know for a fact it has nothing to do with my PC, or any setting on any program on my PC, that prevents it from connecting. It is Frostwire’s problem. Disappointing, to say the least.

  8. I have updated to the new 4.18.1 frostwire version and now all my songs on itunes are gone, they won’t play because the folder that held those songs isn’t available, is there anyway to get my songs back without downloading them all back?

  9. I simply cannot get the newest version of frostwire 4.18 to work on my laptop. The previous versions I have had on this same laptop worked with no problems. Now I am stuck at the starting connection phase. None of the suggestions that are put forth by my fellow Frostwire users works at all.

  10. when i start up my pc,I get the frostwire eye with the lady’s face! Well i don’t want it to show, i have removed frostwire but the lady’s face with the frostwire logo remains! How can I get rid of it?

  11. when i started downloading music i downloaded limewire and that worked for a while, then i was told that frostwire would work ten times better so i got it. it workd for a while until i had to update it and now it just says starting connection all the time. i am really disappointed.

  12. What the heck is going on? why can’t anybody connect? I had no issues with Limewire, upgraded to Snow Leopard and then it stopped working. Downloaded Frostwire in hopes to resolve the problem. Still just hangs at “starting connection”. Changed to port 47855 and it INSTANTLY went to turbocharged. Then it slowly deteriorated to Poor. Now I am hanging at Starting Connection again. The one file I tried to d/l while the connection was working, just sat at queued and didn’t even start to download.

Can someone please look into what the issue is?

  13. Hm, I can’t make Frostwire to work anymore. I start the program & see the openingscreen. Then it goes minimized and the icon goes into my systemtray. Then it just dissapears from there.
When I go to my taskmanager, it tells me Frostwire isn’t even running on my computer anymore.
I re-installed multiple times but it stays the same 😦
    It worked just fine before…

  14. When i connect to the newest edition of Limewire on my Macbook, i have no problems connecting. The connection reads “turbocharged” but as soon as i click on a file to download and it drops down to my download bar, it just says connecting. For however long i let it sit, it just says connecting. Can somebody please help me out!?

  15. I got the latest edition of Frostwire on my Macbook the other day but it won’t let me download music anymore. Every time I click on a song to download, it just says “Connecting…” It can download torrents of movies from other websites, but songs straight from Frostwire do not seem to work. It was fine before. PLEASE FIX THIS or let me know how I can.
