One of the most requested features after Gnutella support was dropped over BitTorrent has been the ability to Preview the contents of a media file while it’s being downloaded. As of 6.0.7 FrostWire tries its best to collect download data to let you preview the file while it’s still being downloaded while not hurting the performance of the torrent’s swarm (sequenced piece fetching is done only for a very limited time or data amount depending on the download’s characteristics, once enough pieces are in for a preview the torrent resumes non-sequence downloading mode).

Download Previews are also available for most cloud (http) downloads.

Several search engine providers were fixed, including TPB and KAT, along with numerous upgrades and optimizations, including a refresh with the latest updates from the libtorrent project to make the torrent downloading experience the best out there.

FrostWire is a free, open source BitTorrent client first released in September 2004, as a fork of LimeWire. It was initially very similar to LimeWire in appearance and functionality, but over time developers added more features, including BitTorrent support. In version 5, Gnutella support was dropped entirely, and FrostWire is only a BitTorrent client. Development of the program has been active since the program was first released in September 2004.

FrostWire for Android reaches Top 30th Best Free App on Google Play, 1st Free App in Media & Video

We are very excited to share that FrostWire for Android has just reached the Top 30th Best Free Apps on Google Play!

It has proudly outranked apps like Twitter, Hulu, Vine or Angry Birds and it might be still climbing the charts. We wanted to thank all the users who supported us throughout the years, submitted bug reports or donated to the project, we couldn’t have done it without you.

FrostWire Top 30 Free App on Google Play

FrostWire was the first peer-2-peer file sharing application on the Android Market. We published our first, very basic version in December of 2010. Back then our smart phones were not so smart, and definitely not as fast as they are now, but we did it and it worked!

“The app we dreamed about back in 2010 is finally here”

Even though very ugly, the alpha and beta versions could search & download and even browse local files to then share with other FrostWire users. The early adopters quickly discovered the app and our user base kept steadily climbing over the years while we kept improving.

Today FrostWire for Android is a native BitTorrent client and cloud downloader with built-in search and multiple downloading options. It not only has a built-in media browser & music player, but also features newly integrated fully featured music library for easier file consumption.  With in-app Wi-Fi sharing, it also allows users to wirelessly transfer files between FrostWire enabled devices on the same local network.

The app we dreamed about back in 2010 is finally here, the app that let’s you Search, Download, Play and Share files easily, from one place has become a reality.

Today it has reached # 30 and it might not be done climbing yet!

If you’ve been a desktop user and you don’t have it on your phone yet, download it now – we truly think you will love it! And if you are on an iPhone, well… just switch to Android so you can continue torrenting on the go.

FrostWire Wins 2nd Place at Miami Bitcoin Hackathon with decentralized shopping marketplace

This weekend our 2 lead developers spent 28 hours hacking away to bring home the silver at the Miami Bitcoin Hackathon organized by BitStop and Blockchain Beach.

hackathon-2nd-place

FrostWire’s project was built using the frostwire-jlibtorrent library and the Bitpay API to create a proof of concept for a p2p shopping marketplace called Seller.Trade on which customers pay with bitcoins.

Seller.Trade home page

End users just need a Bitcoin wallet to pay and web browser to search for products available, and sellers run a server side p2p app that connects to other sellers that participate in the network using the BitTorrent Mainline DHT. Nodes help route searches and products announced.

Seller.Trade search result page

We intend to create a binary release for Linux servers in the coming weeks and see where this experiment takes us.

SellerTrade product page

The project is very simple and it allows anyone in the planet to start their own store on line and accept Bitcoin payments, with the twist, that all the stores are connected to each other using a combination of the Mainline DHT we use for decentralized torrent tracking and an HTTP Rest API.

Check out our presentation to the judges (We finished early and made a video to not leave the presentation to improvisation and Murphy’s whims, and also so the world could see it anytime later on)

And here’s us accepting the prize (In bitcoins of course)

and now it will be in front of our desk to make us proud 🙂

10917564_10153018041182863_463409118_n

question… since you’re still reading all the way down here.

Would you like to see FrostWire yield search results of products that you could buy with Bitcoin?

Would you like to sell things using your own store server without paying any listing or comission fees?

Should we make Seller.Trade into a real world product?

Let us know if you feel any difference when searching, downloading torrents and magnets.

(Ubuntu/Linux binary coming soon, we’re also working on similar upgrades for Android, currently testing pre-alpha on it)

Introducing frostwire-jlibtorrent, a Java based libtorrent wrapper API by the makers of FrostWire

Thanks to the swig project, we’ve been able to create a full blown Java wrapping API for the C++ libtorrent library*, we’ve called it frostwire-jlibtorrent.

This means that now, the power of libtorrent is now accesible to millions of Java programmers around the world who wish to harness decentralized file sharing for any kind of BitTorrent client or enterprise deployment using BitTorrent and Java without the hassle of dealing with JNI or JNA frameworks themselves.

We’ve made sure not to alienate any developers from using frostwire-jlibtorrent in their projects by licensing the source code under The MIT License.

We hope the enterprise world can make use of these libraries, specially for large scale cloud deployments via BitTorrent that may require complex and rich logic tied to existing Java code bases.

We make this announcement as we’re close to finishing the next generation of FrostWire, FrostWire 6. frostwire-jlibtorrent is still under development, and it will continue to be actively developed as the libtorrent team (a very active team) continues to release updates and as we keep updating and enhancing the FrostWire BitTorrent client.

As we develop the new FrostWire 6, switching to frostwire-jlibtorrent as our BitTorrent engine has resulted in incredible performance upgrades which have translated into almost instant download start times, faster downloads, CPU usage reductions of up to 80% when actively downloading torrents, faster DHT magnet torrent info fetching, faster deep torrent search, decreased use of threads and memory, and incredibly faster app shutdown times. We can’t wait to finish FrostWire 6 for you to give frostwire-jlibtorrent a spin.

libtorrent coming to a language near you

By using swig, we’ve now opened the path for not just having java bindings for libtorrent, we’ll now be able to create bindings for other programming languages like Perl, PHP, Tcl, Ruby, C#, Lua and Python**.

We’ll probably be making Python the next libtorrent wrapper as we’d like to bring the power of libtorrent’s DHT to other important open source projects, and we hope the Open source community will join us into porting this project to every language possible to further the use of BitTorrent as a decentralizing technology.

* frostwire-jlibtorrent is currently compatible with libtorrent-rasterbar-1.0.2.

** we are aware that libtorrent comes with python bindings already, but our wrappers, in our opinion will be more pleasurable to code with
