Hotfix release for startup crash on Linux FW and Java 1.6.0 (4.13.1.5-1)

Thanks to the Linux community for reporting the problem with FrostWire crashing on startup if you have Java 1.6.0.

You can download any of these installers and the problem will be solved.

frostwire-4.13.1.5-1.i586.deb (Ubuntu/Debian)
frostwire-4.13.1.5-1.noarch.rpm (RedHat)
frostwire-4.13.1.5-1.noarch.tar.gz (TGZ)

For those who want to know the details, it was an incompatibility issue between JDIC (SystemTray) and Java 1.6.0 which now brings its own Desktop Integration components. For now we’ve turned off the Icon Tray on Linux, until jdic updates, or we can find a better work around.

If you’re really curious and want to see a little bit of java, check this revision and this one.

Rumor: Frostwire might make it to Ubuntu’s Repos

let’s just say for now, we’ve been contacted by one of the Ubuntu developers because of our .deb package, the ubuntu developer said:

“I would like to sponsor it for ubuntu/universe if you are interessted 🙂 “

That’s pretty awesome right?

We want to say the Linux userbase shall never be taken as an unimportant minority on this project.

Special Thanks to the Ubuntu Developers and the Ubuntu User Community for using FrostWire.

Ubuntu Users can also chat with the FrostWire Chat Community
For now you can interact with the FrostWire chat community by connecting to our irc servers at chat.peercommons.net:6667 with your favorite irc client (while we figure out the bug with awt on linux)

Random Donations

We’ve decided to place donation pages upon random download requests, this because ever since 4.13.1 was launched, it has been a great success and the bandwidth/server costs associated are starting to reach costs that are out of our league when it comes to personal donations by members of the FrostWire team.

If you don’t want to donate, click again on the link of your desired installer until you get a direct download.

Linux installers are exempt of the donation page, however if you’d like to collaborate with money you can do so at http://www.frostwire.com/donate, if you want to collaborate with servers and bandwidth please contact us.

Windows Installer of FrostWire 4.13.1 available.

Finally the windows installer is ready, we’ll be testing and fixing any problems you might come across during the day, once the installer has been stabilized we’ll update the official home page for everyone to download.

We remind you that this FrostWire version supports Torrent Downloads, and features Chat Community.

Try FrostWire 4.13.1 PRE-BETA Ubuntu Installer – Now with Bittorrent!!!

Yes, it’s finally ready for Linux users. Windows and Mac Users, installers are coming out pretty soon.

In the meantime, we want Ubuntu users to take it for a spin and give us some feedback, you can leave your comments here on the blog or on the forums

Using bittorrent has never been easier in Linux, you can just drag the torrent files to the FrostWire window, or you can open directly an URL.

Download frostwire-4.13.1.deb here
(The .deb has been Updated like 4 times today, make sure your .deb file can produce this MD5 hash)

How to Install FrostWire 4.13.1 in Ubuntu or Debian based distro
You must have super user privileges, and the Sun’s JRE.
(See HOWTO install the JRE after this)

Then just do this with the .deb file you just downloaded:

sudo dpkg -i frostwire-4.13.1.i586.deb

That’s it. (Yes, this will work with AMD too, it was packaged on an AMD64!)

Now look for FrostWire on your Internet Menu, or Fire it up from a Console or from Alt+F2 by typing frostwire

How to install Java with apt-get

NOTE: If you don’t have Sun’s JRE, FrostWire won’t work.

Make sure your /etc/apt/sources.list has the multiverse enabled:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy multiverse

Then do:

sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre

Enjoy, and send your comments to this thread on the forum.

What do you think?

I think we might have a winner already.

FrostWire needs a logo ($50 bounty)

As we come closer to our next release, we know FrostWire still doesn’t have an iconic logo which people can easily identify.

After months of looking for an image, we came across a few pictures of Frozen Barbed Wires.

We think a simple 2D logo, much in the style of napster (easy to print and easy to recognize anywhere) is what we need stylewise.

Picture this:

or this:

(these images are JUST TO ILLUSTRATE that we want a Barbed Wire, or Frozen Barbed Wire [if its possible to illustrate this] as our Logo, may the best Frozen Barbed Wire illustration win)

with this style:

If you’re interested in getting the $50, you’ll need to have a paypal account so we can pay you the bounty.

If you don’t care about the money you can still submit your sketches.

Please submit your proposals either on the official FrostWire Forum or here.

The winner will have his name and a link to his portfolio website (if he/she has any) on the FrostWire credits, and we’ll make a lot of fuss about the new logo, that’s for sure.

WARNING: No 3D logos please. And If you do something in 3D don’t exagerate, think of how easy would it be to print this logo anywhere. Would it be as easy to print as the Napster Logo? Think simple, containable within a circle or squared area so that we can place it anywhere next to the FrostWire word. If your logo has no letters much better, we want to be able to be identified without any letters.

Wouldn’t this be a cool logo?

Or something along the lines of a real Frozen Wire?

I was thinking about making a 2D logo, with an Electric Post and Frozen Wires…

Can anyone suggest something, we’d like to hear the community’s ideas.
