FrostWire’s source code repository is now Mercurial (Hosted by BitBucket.org)

The latest source code and development branches of FrostWire have moved from SourceForge.net to BitBucket.org.

The address of the project’s source code on bitbucket is http://bitbucket.org/frostwire/frostwire.desktop

For simplicity we just did a new import of the last trunk found in sourceforge.net. This means that the new repository has no history before the initial import. If you need to review hacks done in the past you’ll have to browse the old subversion repository which will remain to exist for as long as sourceforge.net allows.

We’ll still use sourceforge.net as one of our distribution channels, specially for the new Debian Source Packages (dsc, tar.gz) which are almost ready for showtime, hopefully the Ubuntu mantainers will help us get in their package repositories.

Props to the Bitbucket.org and Sourceforge.net teams for such great free services.

Try FrostWire for Android in the Airport/Plane this holiday season

Get FrostWire for your Android

That’s a picture of FrostWire for Android running on two phones and connected to the Open WiFi network near the gate at the airport.

Please give it a try on public networks and let us know what the experience will be like (it’s hard to find public networks that don’t isolate peers for security reasons and FrostWire won’t work in these cases).

If you’re in an airport and the WiFi is not free or it won’t work, please try creating your own android WiFi hotspot and testing how FrostWire will work when one phone is the hotspot.

What better time to share the pictures and videos of your holidays than during the wait for your flight back home or at 30,000 feet while you’re bored flying back? Wouldn’t it be cool to chat with other passengers and break the ice?

New FrostWire for Android 0.4.19

The picture above shows how FrostWire for Android 0.4.19 addresses a privacy issue some users and critics pointed out last week. Now when FrostWire is installed and run for the first time you will get a simple configuration screen to let you know what you’ll be sharing from the start.

On this upgrade there’s been a lot of work to make Peer Browsing a lot faster than previous versions. It also adds a few new features of the file browser and fixes some bugs our users reported last week.

Expect more updates, we follow the “release early, release often” philosophy of software development.

FrostWire for Android 0.4.16 out – getting ready for 0.5.x

We’re proud to announce tonight a new update of FrostWire for Android version 0.4.16.

Today we fixed a bug that was hidden inside one of the most important (and most used) function in our networking core, it was causing things like
the Chat showing messages said by others under your name, or you trying to browse somebody and then browsing somebody else, or trying to browse someone and never getting a response.

Unless you guys can find new “Force Close” issues tonight, we’ve decided that it’s finally time to move to the 0.5.x series, and these will be a very exciting and challenging series of releases before we make it to the Android Market.

Hopefully after tonight we think we can classify further updates as “beta” releases.

0.5.x !!!
The next series will be all about having FrostWire for Android talk to other devices. We hope 0.5.x not only will make the software better, but make your Android device more useful as a whole.

With FrostWire and the ability to transfer files via Wi-Fi to your computer you won’t have any excuses like “I don’t know where my USB cable is”, or “I’m to lazy to mount my phone right now”. Hopefully this will bring a lot of new amazing content to both mobile network and to the gnutella network.

As you might have guessed by now, we’ll first connect to your Mac/Windows/Linux Desktop/Laptop via FrostWire for Desktop (our BitTorrent/Gnutella client for desktops). But it’s in our early plans to connect FrostWire to the PS3 and the Xbox (or any device that supports UPnP/DLNA browsing and streaming) .

As we do this we’ll also try to make the appearance of the software look a little better. If you can suggest any great UI/UX people we should talk to we’d appreciate it.

Without revealing anymore than we should at this point, I leave you with the entire changelog.

Thank you for all the support and keep spreading the word, the more the merrier.

New FrostWire for Android 0.4.15 finally here

Download Now

If you haven’t restarted your FrostWire you better do so now to get the automatic update. If you haven’t installed FrostWire at all on your Android then this is probably one of the best times to go and try it since it just got a lot better to use.

The Peer browsing functionality just got a lot better after 0.4.15, we reimplemented big part of our networking framework and FrostWire can now communicate using UDP or TCP as it pleases, all it’s internal messaging can now be configured independent of the IP transport layer and now we can experiment what kinds of transport we should use for what messages.

Other than that we fixed some usability issues suggested by our tester community, so we think 0.4.15 will be a great release, but still there’s a lot more coming before we hit the Android Market.

Now try it, enjoy it and break it, then let us know so we can fix it, the comments section is all yours for feedback and ideas. (And no, we’re not doing 3G anytime soon, it’s too slow and your carrier won’t like you very much if you start doing p2p over their 3G network)

The removed peer will be blacklisted during the lifetime of your FrostWire session.

New FrostWire for Android v.0.4.7 Out!

A new FrostWire for Android is out, start or restart your FrostWire for an automatic update. If you have not installed it yet, then go right now to frostwire.com/android and install it on your android device.

This new version gets ready for the fast growth of the first peer to peer mobile network in the planet. Now your FrostWire will limit itself to a number of connections to guarantee optimal performance and use less resources. Even though you’ll be connected to about 30 other peers, your searches will reach the entire network in less than a second thanks to the power of peer to peer algorithms.

FrostWire 0.4.7 features an even smaller installer (only 357Kb) and it improves the user experience by taking care of more details and improved networking core.

Read the full Changelog since 0.4.6 for more details on this update.

New FrostWire 4.21 series

Welcome to the new 4.21 series. This new family of releases starts off with two big upgrades: Automatic Installer Downloads (via BitTorrent) and the new Vuze Core 4.5.0.4 for even faster BitTorrent downloads.

We also added a new feature for those users that complained about the FrostClick Promotions, If you’re not into supporting independent content creators we understand, and now you can go to the FrostWire Settings and turn the promotions off altogether. You will only see the FrostWire or FrostClick logo which is the default welcome screen of the application.

Getting ready for Android and more

Our Android efforts are well underway by now, the FrostWire App for Android is very usable and it should be getting a “beta” label pretty soon. In the meantime the application has been tested in over 250 cities all over the world (by a few folks on each) and it’s getting ready for showtime.

That means that the next step will be FrostWire for Desktop talking to your Android device. This will be one of the major additions to FrostWire for Desktop 4.21 series. Expect great tools to copy files from/to your Android device via Wi-Fi.

We’re also planning on creating a FrostClick Torrent search service which will be seamlessly integrated into the “Torrent Search” results, making even more legal content available to you.

Among other very delayed ideas, 4.21 might introduce the long promised plugin platform so that you can extend FrostWire in ways we can’t possibly imagine. We know that the p2p network can be used for far more than file sharing [democratic distributed computing, social networking, gaming, and more] and we want to give you the tools to help us deliver new services on top of it. Stay tuned.
